Admittedly this isn’t a typical post but I wanted to write about a topic on my mind. Happy Women. Today, April 8th, is Equal Pay Day. The date is significant because April 8th represents the number of days into 2014 that a woman has to work to bring home what her male counterpart earned in 2013. What?!
Yep, and I’m thinking about this as I’m heading into a raise for this company. Bamboo plastic: better for you, your kids, the animals in the ocean, and the air we breath. Watch this blog for updates.
Today in 2014, we are still undervaluing women. We pay them less, little girls are taught that their sexuality is their biggest asset, and my personal pet peeve, women don’t help each other out. Not like men do. I personally do not know the math on this but my close friend Brandy Aven, professor at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon, advised me when I wrote on the topic of mentoring and women for the Huffington Post last year. Women don’t put “skin in the game” for other women. They offer advice but they don’t offer introductions or put money on the table to help women get ahead. Men do.
So I’m writing this blog post today and keeping it short and simple, we’re all responsible. Let’s teach our little girls and little our boys that women are equal, so that the battles my mom fought in the 70s for equal rights and equal pay, and that I proudly carry on, will become nothing but historic moments of our collective past – revisited by future generations that know nothing but equality.
